The exact starting kit for a new character has been a debate amoung administrators for quite some time. At this point, in addition to all things that you would normally get (minus the book that no one ever uses) you also get +20 skill balls. Skill balls are a ball in your pack that you may double click on and add 20 points to any skill. The exact number varies.
If you have created a brand new account and this is your first character, you will get 5 +20 skill balls. That is enough in skill balls to GM any one skill. If you start with 2 skills at 50, that would be enough to GM one and have 90 in the other. Well, you get the picture. As implied above, if you are at 90 in a skill and use a +20 skill ball and have not used any powerscrolls (so your max is 100) you will lose the other +10.
If this is your second character on this account, you will get 4 skill balls. If this is your 3rd character, you will get 3. 4th=2, 5th=1, 6th=0. You get the picture.
Before you get the idea of creating 6 chars giving all the skill balls to one character, they are blessed and cannot be traded, dropped, sold or otherwise leave your pack. So, you can use them and only you may use them. You can certainly save them as long as you want. Death, looting, stealing, etc. will not impact the skill balls. They will stay with you.
Likewise, the first character gets 3000 gold while each additional char gets 750.
